Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction June 2016
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/15/2016
It’s not often that a historic hockey item surfaces that we haven’t handled before, but that’s exactly the case with this exciting lot. Consigned directly from the Leichnitz family, we have a ring that was presented to Julius “Pete” Leichnitz for his participation with the RCAF Flyers as gold medal winners at the 1948 Winter Olympics in St. Moritz. Size 10 ¼”, the ring features a detailed maple leaf on the face along with crossed hockey sticks encompassed by “RCAF Flyers Olympic Champions 1948”. Embossed laurel wreaths grace each shank, with “Birks 10K” stamped on the inner band. Hailing from an April 9th 1948 dinner to honour the Flyers, each 10 gram ring was presented by Governor General Viscount Alexander on behalf of the Royal Canadian Air Force. An LOA from the Leichnitz family will accompany this truly historic piece of hockey memorabilia.
The ring remains in gorgeous condition, exhibiting just light wear from use. There are a few scratches, dings and marks, but they are isolated to the bottom of the band, occurring from contact with other surfaces while worn.
