Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction June 2016
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/15/2016
A junior phenom at the age of 16, Wayne Gretzky suddenly found himself making his pro debut with the Indianapolis Racers of the WHA in the fall of 1978. The 17-year-old Wayne is pictured in his Racers uniform along with the caption "The Great Gretzky" on the cover of a full and intact copy of the October 27, 1978 issue of the Hockey News. Gretz had 6 points in 8 games in Indianapolis before he was sold to Edmonton, where he would finish out the WHA's final season with the Oilers before helping them make the move to the NHL in 1979-80. An original copy of the Oilers' first NHL media guide is also featured in this lot of 4. Also included are two original Oilers programs, one from their last WHA season and the other from their inaugural NHL campaign. Gretzky and Gordie Howe are featured in the Edmonton and New England lineups in a program from the Oilers' 7-2 win on April 6, 1979. Wayne is featured on the cover of a program from an April 2, 1980 game against Minnesota.
