Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction June 2016
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/15/2016
The Great One’s 1979-80 O-Pee-Chee rookie card leads this all-Gretzky stash, with the crease-free example featuring less-than-perfect centering, a somewhat rough cut down the left edge and only slight corner touches. We see it as EX-MT and similar to the (unmarked) Oilers team checklist from the same year. A second-year OPC card of Wayne is NM+ (OC), while two from ’81-82 are NM and VG+. We cannot spot a crease in a complete run of the legend’s regular OPC cards from the rest of the 1980s, with the cards averaging NM-MT and joined by an ’88-89 Topps card picturing Wayne holding up his new L.A. Kings jersey. A half-dozen “leader” cards from the ‘80s are also present, with the rest mostly from the first half of the ‘90s and the card boom era, when Upper Deck, Score and Pro Set issues dominated. A few pleasant surprises may be uncovered, with a neat porcelain “Gartlan” card-size creation one of the notables. Two reprint Gretzky RCs are also present.
