"The Trail of the Stanley Cup" is a definite prerequisite to any important hockey library. Author Charles Coleman's three-volume history of hockey and Lord Stanley's trophy from 1893 to 1967 is contained within these three books. All three volumes are leather-bound, with only 1,000 copies of this special edition of the first two books presented to important hockey figures, while the third was limited to 1,500 copies. The books in this matching full set are all individually numbered #533, and include their embellished slipcases. Vol. 1 features an affixed presentation insert with the recipients name along with “Compliments of the National Hockey League”, and it’s signed by Frank Selke.
The condition for the offered set is as follows. 1) Vol. 1. The clear plastic dust jacket exhibits rips along the top, along with some age spotting. The interior remains clean with just toning. There is also a slit along the bottom of the slipcase. 2) Vol. 2. A small piece is missing from the bottom of the dust jacket, with a few of the interior pages having creases/fold lines. The slipcase also has a few dings. 3) Vol. 3. No dust jacket is present, with the spine somewhat pushed-in along the top. There is also a slit along the top back portion of the slipcase.
James Arthur deLalanne CBE MC (2) BA CA was born in Montreal, Québec (QC), son of John Arthur deLalanne and Jeannie Morrison (McOuat) deLalanne. He was educated in Montreal and in 1915 joined the Princess Patricia Light Infantry Regiment as a Private. Later, he was commissioned in the field and served as Lieutenant and Captain in the 60th Canadian Light Infantry Battalion and in the 5th Canadian Mounted Rifles Battalion. He was wounded three times and was twice awarded the Military Cross (MC) for gallantry in action against the enemy.
After WW1, he graduated from McGill University in 1919 with a BA degree. He joined McDonald Currie & Company and qualified as a Chartered Accountant with the firm in 1923. In 1940, he rejoined the active Army with the rank of Major. Later, he held various staff appointments and in 1943 was promoted to the rank of Brigadier. In 1945, he held the post of Vice Adjutant General. His outstanding services were recognized when he was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE). The Czechoslovak Republic appointed him to the Order of the White Lion.
In time, he became Senior Partner with McDonald, Currie & Company, Montreal. He was active in sporting circles and was at one time, Vice chairman, Canadian Rugby Union and Chairman, Board of Governors, Québec Amateur Hockey Association. In June 1924, he married Mildred Pollock Eakin of Westmount, QC. They had one son.
