Fantastic World War II-era team photo from the old Cleveland Arena depicts the powerful 1943-44 Cleveland Barons of the AHL. This big black and white beauty portraying the West Division champions appears as it was originally hung in the Cleveland Arena. Coached by HOFer Bun Cook, the Barons led the AHL with a 33-14-7 regular season record for 73 points, five more than the East Division champion Hershey Bears. Barons center Tom “Tucker” Burlington led the AHL with 82 points in 52 games and the Barons had three of the league’s four top scorers that season, including Les Cunningham, who finished third with 78 points, and Louis Trudel, who finished fourth with 76. Earl Bartholomew and Peter Horecek made it five of the top seven! All are pictured here along with HOFer Bill Cook, the Barons’ GM, in this 13 1/2" x 28 1/2" image on a white background with the team name, season, “Western Division Champions”, and team member names at the bottom, including two blank spaces for a pair of unidentified players in the back row. The frame appears just as it was when it was removed from the old arena’s walls, with screwholes through it and scrapes to the blue paint on the bottom right edge.
