Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction June 2016
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/15/2016
Only the third season in Beantown, the Boston Bruins were augmented for the 1926-27 season by a number of important players who would go on to form the genesis of the original big bad Bruins. Billy Coutu was added along the blueline, where he would play with arguably the meanest and roughest player in history, Sprague Cleghorn. Harry Oliver and Duke Keats would also join the cause. But no player was more important than the addition of a youngster from Saskachewan named Eddie Shore. This third-year Bruins guide has been signed by 12. Included are signatures from deceased Hall of Famers Shore, Ross, Cleghorn, Oliver and Charles Adams, along with Coutu, Hitchman, Stewart, Herberts, Stuart, Roberts and Percy Galbraith.
Each signee has added his John Hancock to the page with his respective image, with all signatures appearing in a mix of fountain pen inks. Sprague Cleghorn has added his “Peg” nickname, while the Art Ross signature is a variation not often seen. We should also note that the Shore signature is a very early example, with this being his first season in the NHL. The 3 ½” x 6” booklet remains in pleasing condition, with wear to the cover including small creases. There is also some wear along the spine and edges, with the staples exhibiting slight rust. The center page is detached at the top staple, but still attached at bottom. It’s fair to say that this first-year Eddie Shore signed Bruins guide is most likely the only example in existence, so bid accordingly.
