Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction June 2016
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/15/2016
This giclee on canvas work features the one and only Wayne Gretzky, and it’s a special artist proof edition that was presented to Wayne by the artist Stephen Holland. Pictured at the conclusion of the 1987 Canada Cup, Wayne jubilantly celebrates yet another Canadian victory as he raises the Canada Cup over his head. At roughly 28” x 42”, the canvas has been hand-embellished by the artist, with a thick brushstroke of silver in the bottom left. Signed by both Gretzky and the artist in gold paint pen, the especially attractive piece has been hand numbered “EA 3/3” (Epreuve d'Artiste) showing its edition is extremely limited. As mentioned, this canvas originates from Wayne’s personal collection, and it remains in absolutely gorgeous condition, with just the the slightest warping to the frame to mention. A copy of the original COA from WGA will accompany this thought-provoking work of art.
Stephen Holland is one of the nation's foremost contemporary sport artists today. Holland says, "I like the drama of sports the way you see it on a TV close-up" like a slow motion replay. I like to freeze-frame the image and display it in everyone's living room." Capturing the fury, emotion and drama of sports is what Stephen Holland does best. Being trained in fine art, he brings classical form to this universal subject. His paintings, lithographs and serigraphs are in private and corporate collections around the world including the Staples Center in downtown Los Angeles. His traditional education in art, years of experience and his love of sports made Holland an obvious choice for the 1993 Sport Artist of the Year Award. Holland's stunning edition of four images following the career of the great Wayne Gretzky sold out quickly. From the glory days of the Edmonton Oilers and the thrilling Canada Cup victories to the Los Angeles limelight and his swan song with the Rangers, Holland has captured the man and his game in striking imagery and vivid color. The original limited-edition of 99, along with 15 artist proofs, were grabbed up by collectors as soon as they became available. Art gallery retail price lists have the embellished limited giclee works valued at up to $10,000 per print or $40,000 for the set. The ones offered here were presented by the artist Stephen Holland to Wayne Gretzky and are from his personal collection.
