Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction December 2022

Symbolic of hockey's highest achievement, this gorgeous miniature grail stands just over one foot tall. The Edmonton Oilers claimed their fourth Stanley Cup in five seasons in the spring of 1988. It would prove to be Wayne Gretzky's last Cup as a player as his shocking trade to the Los Angeles Kings followed on the heels of his storybook wedding that summer. Gretzky's name and those of all the Oilers' players, coaches, staff and management who contributed to their 1987-88 championship are displayed on this magnificent award, etched in silver plate on the trophy's barrel. The full names of Acton, Anderson, Beukeboom, Courtnall, Fuhr, Gregg, Hannan, Huddy, Krushelnyski, Kurri, Lacombe, Lowe, MacTavish, McClelland, McSorley, Messier, Muni, Ranford, Simpson, Smith and Tikkanen are all there along with Gretzky, whose 31 assists still stand as the Stanley Cup playoffs record. The Oilers' captain recorded 43 points - including a finals record 13 in five games - to claim his second Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP. Peter Pocklington, Glen Sather, John Muckler, Ted Green and Bruce MacGregor are among the names engraved above the players.
Produced by Boffey, this example is similar to those awarded to each member of the winning team by the National Hockey League in a tradition dating back to 1958. It must be noted that the original version of the trophy had green felt covering the bottom of the black wood base while this one has brown felt.
Displaying in excellent condition with just light scratches seen throughout, light tarnishing is observed to the upper portion of the trophy and the bowl.
