Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction June 2016
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/15/2016
Beginning in the 1993-94 campaign, the Toronto Maple Leafs began a practice in which former Maple Leaf greats were honoured. A special banner, portraying the player’s image and sweater number, is displayed permanently high above centre ice at the home of the Toronto Maple Leafs. With this custom, the former player’s honoured number stays in circulation and is deemed an “Honoured Number”. Ted Kennedy was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1966, and on October 3rd 1993, had his banner raised to the rafters at Maple Leaf Gardens. The banner now hangs proudly at Air Canada Centre. Ted Kennedy's #9 and Syl Apps' #10 were the first sweater numbers officially honoured by the Maple Leafs. This Maple Leafs #9 jersey was worn by Darby Hendrickson in the 1993-94 post-season, with the special “Kennedy” patches added at this time. Glenn Anderson wore #9 prior to his trade to the New York Rangers on March 21st 1994, with Hendrickson only playing in 2 playoffs games for the Maple Leafs; on April 28th 1994 in Chicago and on May 2nd 1994 at home vs San Jose.
Maska Ultrafil tagging remains attached to the collar along with a size “54” tag, with embroidered CCM and NHL patches on the back bottom hem. Styled with an attractive and classic Leafs crest along with tackle twill numbers and name-on-nameplate, with the vintage-style “Kennedy” patches over both shoulders. Due to its limited two-game use, visible wear is light with just a few faint marks on the left elbow along with some light staining on the lower front.
