Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction June 2016
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/15/2016
An institution in the US, the Super Bowl originates from the upstart AFL becoming serious competition to the long established NFL. During the mid-1960s, a merger was discussed between the competing leagues, with the champions of each meeting to crown a world champion, as per details of the merger. First coined by Chiefs owner Lamar Hunt, the term “Super Bowl” wasn’t well received to start, with the first two games taking place in 1967 and ’68 originally referred to as the “AFL-NFL Championship Game”. The Green Bay Packers would emerge victorious in both contests, first defeating Kansas City in Super Bowl I, than beating Oakland for their second consecutive title. In this lot we have programs for the inaugural Super Bowl in 1967, along with an example for the sophomore game played in 1968. At roughly 8” x 11”, the inaugural program exhibits some wear to the cover, including a few small scratches and creases. The spine remains in good shape, with a little wear present along edges. The interior remains clean, including the fold-out cover, with just the odd surface wrinkle and small amounts of toning. The follow-up program for the 1968 Super Bowl is also roughly 8” x 11”, and it exhibits just regular handling wear including the odd little crease or scratch. There is also some light wear to the thick (120 pages) spine as well. Overall, these programs for the historic first and second editions of the Super Bowl display beautifully, and will be a welcome edition to any serious NFL or Super Bowl collection.
