Going the full seven games, the 1940 World Series witnessed the ’39 Series runner-up Cincinnati Reds taking on the Detroit Tigers, who were making their first Fall Classic appearance since their last Championship win in 1935. Despite being outscored by the Tigers in the Series 28-22, the Reds were crowned World Champions for the first time since the 1919 Series debacle. In this lot we have a pair of programs from the 1940 World Series, including examples for both Briggs Stadium and Crosley Field.
The condition for the offered World Series programs is as follows. 1) 1940 program issued for Briggs Stadium (8 ½” x 11”), scored for Game 3. The cover exhibits corner creasing along with wear to the spine. Complete and firmly bound, the staples exhibit some rusting, while the interior remains fairly clean, with the cover crease in the bottom right continuing to the second page. 2) 1940 program issued for Crosley Field (8 ½” x 11 ½”), unscored. With surface wear, toning and a few edge creases to the cover, the spine also exhibits wear while the back has some light staining. Firmly bound, the program shows light water damage, especially to the top right corner of the interior pages.
