This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/15/2016
A charter member of the American league in 1901, the Detroit Tigers had formerly played in the Western League, which was the minor league predecessor to the American League. Despite winning consecutive pennants behind the legendary Ty Cobb from 1907-1909, the Tigers would not win their first Fall Classic until 1935. They would then add their second of four World Championships a decade later, in 1945. In this lot we have a pair of World Series programs for 1935, along with a pair for the Tigers second Series win in 1945. Also included is a phantom program cover for 1950. The 1935 Series would see the Tigers defeat the Chicago Cubs in six games, while the ’45 Series again witnessed the Tigers defeating the Cubs, with the Series being closely contested and going the full seven games.
The condition for the five offered World Series programs are as follows. 1) 1935 program issued for Wrigley Field (6” x 9 ¼”), scored (erroneously). The cover exhibits a typical vertical crease, along with tape to repair edge tears. There is also wear to the spine along with other random small scratches and creases. The interior remains fairly clean, with the staples exhibiting rust. 2) 1935 program issued for Navin Field (8 ¼” x 10 ¾”), unscored. With just general handling wear and toning, the program exhibits the odd small crease or cover ding. 3) 1945 program issued for Wrigley Field (8 ¼” x 10 ¾”), scored for Game 5. There are a few pencil notations on the cover with toning on the reverse, along with the odd tiny corner/edge crease. 4) 1945 program issued for Briggs Stadium (8 ½” x 11”), scored. The program exhibits heavy creasing throughout, along with considerable wear to the spine and interior, which includes a tear along the bottom of the spine. 5) 1950 phantom cover for Detroit vs Philadelphia (8 ¼” x 11”). Covers only, it shows light creasing along edges.
