Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction June 2016
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/15/2016
The 1938 and ’39 World Series’ would be the third and fourth consecutive for the Bronx Bombers, with a changing of the guard so to speak. Lou Gehrig would play in his last Fall Classic in 1938, while a young Joe DiMaggio would be playing in his third Championships that same year. In this lot we have a pair of programs for each year, along with a phantom Pittsburgh Pirates program for 1938. It would be déjà vu for the Chicago Cubs in 1938, again being swept by the Yankees just as they had been in 1932, with the Cincinnati Reds fairing no better the following year, also going down to the powerful American Leaguers in four straight games. The offered programs for 1938 include and example scored for the clinching 4th game, while the 1939 programs include a Game 2 scored example.
The condition for the five World Series programs are as follows. 1) 1938 program issued for Wrigley Field (8 ¾” x 11”), unscored. The covers exhibit heavy wear, including marks and creases, along with some toning. There is also some wear to the spine, with the interior remaining clean, with just a few marks along with some edge wear. 2) 1938 program issued for Yankee Stadium (8 ¾” x 11 ½”), scored for Game 4. The program exhibits a number of condition issues including toning, creasing and water damage, all along the right hand edge and through the entire publication. There are also some small tears along the spine, with the interior showing wear including toning, creasing and a few marks present. 3) 1938 Pittsburgh Pirates phantom program (8 ¾” x 11 ½”). Made as the Pirates appeared to be close to winning the pennant, the program’s cover features edge and corner wear (the cover is oversized), along with toning and tape including residue. The interior remains fairly clean, with just the odd mark present. 4) 1939 program issued for Yankee Stadium (8 ¾” x 11 ¾”), scored for Game 2. The covers remain firmly attached, along with the interior. Heavy corner wear and creasing is present, with the spine showing wear as well. The interior also exhibits wear including creasing, with heavy toning/staining to pages near the back. 5) 1939 program issued for Crosley Field (8 ¼” x 11 ½”), unscored. Tightly bound, the program shows moderate spine wear, along with a few small creases and edge tears. The interior remains clean, with just the odd surface crease or mark present.
