Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction June 2016
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/15/2016
It’s very fair to say that with 5 World Series wins in the 1930’s, the New York Yankees dominated the decade. Ruth and Gehrig would play in their last Championships, while a young slugger named Joe DiMaggio would make his first of ten memorable post-season appearances in 1936. In this lot we have four offered programs, with a pair for the 1932 Series remembered for Ruth’s “called shot”, including a scored example for Game 2, which would be Ruth’s last World Series game played at Yankee Stadium. There are also programs for 1936 and 1937, with the ’37 program scored for Game 3. New York would sweep the Cubs in ’32, defeat the crosstown rival Giants in six in 1936, and only give up a game to the Giants the following year in 1937, outscoring their National League competitor 28-12.
The condition for the four World Series programs are as follows. 1) 1932 program issued for Wrigley Field (6” x 9”), unscored. Despite having a typical vertical crease that runs through the program, it remains in pleasing condition, with bright and vibrant colours. There is a little wear to the spine along with the odd small crease on the back cover, while the interior remains clean. 2) 1932 program issued for Yankee Stadium (9 ½” x 11”), scored for Game 2. As mentioned, this was Babe Ruth’s last Series game played at Yankee Stadium. With just a light vertical bend that doesn’t show creasing, the program remains in very pleasing condition, with just a bit of corner wear, along with some light wear to the spine. The center spread is also present but detached from the staples. 3) 1936 program unscored (9” x 11”). This program exhibits condition issues including having both covers detached, along with toning, creasing and corner wear. The interior remains fairly clean, with the staples exhibiting rust and the center spread detached but present. 4) 1937 program issued for the Polo Grounds (9” x 11”), scored for Game 3. The cover exhibits edge tears along with a tear along the spine, and a large example near the top. The interior remains fairly clean, with a few stray pencil marks present. All pages along with the cover remain firmly attached.
