Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction June 2016
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/15/2016
Played before and amid the Great Depression, the 1929 and ‘30 World Series’ would again see the American League’s Philadelphia Athletics, who were making their sixth and seventh Fall Classic appearances since the Series’ inception. The 1929 Series would witness the Athletics taking on the Chicago Cubs, who were making their first appearance since losing the 1918 Series to the Red Sox. The Athletics proved too much for the Cubs, winning the Series handily in 5 games. The 1930 Series would again see a dominant performance from the Athletics, this time taking on Gabby Street’s St. Louis Cardinals. Outscored 21-12 in the Series, the Cards would go down in six games. In this lot we have a pair of programs for the ’29 Series, along with a second pair for 1930.
The condition for the four World Series programs are as follows. 1) 1929 program issued for Shibe Park, unscored. At 8 ½” x 11”, the substantial program features the participant’s managers on the cover in cameos. With the interior firmly attached to the staples, the cover has a long tear along the spine that has been repaired with clear tape. The rest of the program exhibits just normal handling wear. 2) 1929 program issued for Wrigley Field, unscored. Diminutive program at 6” x 9”, the original tie string remains tightly in place, with just regular handling wear. The interior remains in near mint, with the colours on the front and back cover bright and vibrant. This program can be considered a high-grade example. 3) 1930 program issued for Sportsman’s Park, scored for Game 4. Large in size at 9” x 12”, the program has a number of condition issues including toning and corner/edge wear, along with edge tears and a few random creases. The spine exhibits tears from the top and base, but remains attached. Scored in pencil, the interior remains fairly clean with a date notation on the cover. 4) 1930 program issued for Shibe Park (8 ½” x 11”), scored. With an image of longtime Philadelphia skipper Connie Mack on the cover, the large program exhibits a number of flaws including clear tape along all edges of the cover, with a typical vertical crease that runs through the publication. With additional tape along the spine of the interior, the program remains bound, with fairly clean pages.
