Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction June 2016
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/15/2016
This lot contains five World Series programs that all feature New York Yankees victories. We have pairs for 1927 and 1928, along with a 1923 example. The Yankees would make their third consecutive Series appearance in 1923, and tied with the Giants at two games a piece, the Yankees would win the next two for their first ever postseason finals victory. The 1927 and ’28 Series’ would see the Yankees taking on the Pittsburgh Pirates and St. Louis Cardinals respectively, with neither producing enough competition for the powerful Bombers. Both Series’ would be won by New York in four straight games, forever cementing the reputation of Murderers’ Row.
The condition for the five offered World Series programs are as follows. 1) 1923 program issued for Yankee Stadium (9 ¼” x 11”), scored for Game 5. The cover exhibits wear including creases along with light toning. Firmly attached to the staples, there are a few interior tears along with additional toning. The staples also show rust with the center spread somewhat loose along the top staple. 2) 1927 program issued for Yankee Stadium (9 ¼” x 11”), scored for Game 3. Ink notations are present on the cover, mostly along the top border, with additional pen marks in the interior. A large vertical crease runs through the program, while the spine appears to have been repaired, which includes additional staples added. 3) 1927 program issued for Forbes Field (9” x 11”), unscored. Tape remains on the spine keeping it attached, with a period notation on the cover in ink from the original vendor. With handling wear, creases and rounded corners, the program’s interior remains fairly clean. 4) 1928 program issued for Yankee Stadium (9 ¼” x 11”), scored for Game 2. With pencil notations on the cover, there are tears along the spine, but the covers remain attached. With a few assorted creases present along with corner wear, there are 2 pieces of contemporary newsprint referencing the game that have been glued in, along with the original owners ticket stub. 5) 1928 program issued for Sportsman’s Park (9” x 11 ½”), unscored. A vertical crease running through the publication is present, along with wear to the cover’s surface. There are a number of small creases on the cover and interior, along with some discolouration/staining. All of the interior pages are also detached.
