Well remembered for the Game 2 and 3 blasts that gave Frank “Home Run” Baker his sobriquet, the 1911 World Series saw Connie Mack’s Athletics reap revenge after being handily defeated by the Giants in the second Fall Classic in 1905. This scarce and highly desirable 1911 World Series program hails from the first game of the Series, where over 38000 witnessed Christy Mathewson complete 28 straight shutout innings in World Series play, a record that would stand until surpassed seven years later by a young pitcher named Babe Ruth. Despite late inning heroics in Game 5 including Larry Doyle’s apparent missed touch on home plate, New York succumbed to Philadelphia in Game 6 allowing 13 runs. Scored in pencil, the program features Giants owner John T Brush on the cover, with images of the participants inside along with an interesting advertisement for America’s National Game by Albert Spalding.
At roughly 9” x 11”, the program exhibits a number of flaws with the front and back covers - along with interior pages almost completely detached. There are also some small additional creases to interior pages along with a small piece of clear tape on the front cover’s reverse, as well as some chipping and edge wear along the detached spine. Despite these unsightly flaws, the program remains fairly clean including the cover, and is ideal for display. 1911 World Series programs rarely make themselves available in any condition, and this example is perfect for any advanced World Series collectors trying to fill in this difficult gap.
