Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction June 2016
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/15/2016
As the game of hockey evolved throughout the 20th century, so did the equipment. Heavy one-piece sticks gave way to light and flexible modern composite models, wool sweaters became durene, mesh and finally, synthetic polyester jerseys, and gloves went from being light and padded leather with wooden reed models to the dense and heavily padded Kevlar and carbon fiber examples worn today. We have 7 different pairs of vintage gloves in this lot ranging from approx. the 1930s until the late-1960s, along with other vintage equipment including a blocker and glove combo, shoulder pads, elbow pads and more. The gloves that have identifiable maker’s marks/labels include examples made by Reach, D&R and CCM.
We have 5 pairs of gloves that range anywhere from the 1930s to mid-1950s, along with 2 pairs of gloves from the 1960s. The gloves all remain in pleasing condition, with wear commensurate with their former use. While not overly abused, there are repairs, stains, discolouration, holes and associated condition issues. The accompanying equipment includes 2 pairs of shoulder pads, with an earlier leather and felt set made by Holdens, and a later pair made by D&R. There are 2 pairs of elbow pads most likely from the 1960s, with one set made by D&R, the other by CCM. We have a pair of shin pads made by TruLine and sold at Eatons, a pair of leather ankle supports made by D&R, and a blocker and glove from approx. the late-1950s to early-1960s. While probably not a true matched pair, both the blocker (Holdens) and glove are similar in style and date to the same period. There is similar writing on both in marker, with a hole over the thumb section of the blocker.
