Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction June 2016
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/15/2016
The Whitby Dunlops were chosen as defending Allan Cup champions to represent Canada at the 1958 World Championships, and they didn’t disappoint, bringing the world title back to Canada in what is remembered as one of the top achievements in Canadian hockey history. This lot contains a huge 1958 framed team photo, along with a circa 1957-58 game-used stick from team member Charlie Burns. The 39” x 57” photo with all members pictured is framed to 43 ¼” x 61 ½”, with a thin plastic cover opposed to glass. The stick used by Burns has “Burns” handwritten on the shaft along with approx. 16 signatures scripted in marker, including Charlie Burns (twice), Harry Sinden, Bob Attersley and others. The photo suffers from a number of condition issues including foxing, scratches and surface wear, with a small area of surface loss in the upper right corner. The plastic covering also shows issues, with scratches and light staining present, while the frame exhibits a few dings and marks. A 3” x 24” cardboard card with the players in the photo listed is included, and it was at one time displayed with the frame. Others who have signed the Hespeler stick used by team member Charlie Burns includes Alex "Sandy" Air, George Samolenko, Connie Broden, Roy Edwards, Tom O'Connor, Ed Redmond, Ted O'Connor, Bus Gagnon (coach), Frank Bonello and others. The stick shows nice game-use, with the original tape on the blade and shaft, with tape added to the blade to secure the original tape. Numerous marks are present on the blade and lower shaft, with Burns adding a second signature across the blade. Please note that due to the size of the photo, special shipping arrangements may be required.
