Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction November 2015
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/3/2015
Arranged and conceived by Lester Patrick, he envisioned an all-star game between the Western PCHA and the Eastern NHA. Art Ross was contacted and arrangements were made for a three game series which would take place in BC at the start of April in 1912. Ross hand chose his Eastern team and it was made up of himself and other Hall of Famers including Sprague Cleghorn, Paddy Moran, Odie Cleghorn, Cyclone Taylor, Jack Darragh and Joe Malone. The squad also included Hamby Shore, Skene Ronan and Jack McDonald. The Western All-Stars included Patrick, Hughie Lehman, Ernie Johnson, Newsy Lalonde, Tom Dunderdale, Ran McDonald and Harry Hyland. The Western All-Stars were triumphant, winning 2 out of the three games played. This lot contains incredibly scarce and possibly unique images from this very series! Four different original photos are offered in this lot, including a team photo of the Eastern All-Stars, and three additional photos of the team on their way to battle the Western All-Stars. Please see the Classic Auctions website for a full breakdown of each of these historically important antique photos.
This lot contains four images from the 1912 East vs West All-Star Series! Four different original photos are included. First we have a team photo of the Eastern All-Stars in full uniform, at just under 3 ½ x 5”, there are some condition issues including some creasing, tiny tears and 2 clipped corners, but the central image is clean. Next we have three different photos of the Eastern All-Stars that measure just over 3” x 4”. Each shows the team posed around a train in their full team sweaters. With just light handling, these photos are in very good condition. Joe Malone who is present in the team photo, is absent from the train photos but this makes perfect sense as Malone never made the trip to BC, which assures us that the train photos were taken when the team was either departing the east, or arriving in the west. We cannot stress how rare and important these museum quality photos are, with the three smaller photos possible unique and the only existing examples. All four photos were originally obtained from a family member of Jack Darragh, adding very impressive provenance.
Addendum; According to contemporary newspaper articles, Joe Malone did make the trip to BC to battle the Western All-Stars, taking part in two of the three games played.
