Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction November 2015

Serious Ranger, goalie and vintage jersey collectors will all be enticed by this tremendous offering from the family of Hall of Fame netminder Charlie Rayner. Christened Claude Earl Rayner, the Saskatchewan native picked up the nickname “Chuck” early in his hockey career and it stuck. Regarded by many as one of the nicest guys you would ever want to meet, Rayner began his Rangers career in 1945, after two seasons with the New York/Brooklyn Americans and three years in the Canadian Armed Forces. This sensational old wool sweater is from Chuck’s second-to-last of eight years in New York, the ‘51-52 season. Tie-neck style jersey (six eyelets) includes Gerry Cosby and size 50 tags sewn-in near the hem (left seam), with red and white tackle twill letters spelling “Rangers” diagonally down the front. A similar number “1” is sewn on the back and the sweater exhibits good game use. We count five mostly dime-size team repairs done in black thread on the front (all in the blue), two similar jobs on both the back and left sleeve, another on the right and a final one in the red stripe (done in pinkish thread) on the back. There are just over a dozen small holes throughout, including at the right armpit. Great interior pilling and pilling at the cuffs is also to mention. Jersey is photo-matched to various loose threads in the "ANG" of "RANGERS" on the front of the jersey. Truly awesome vintage wool was donned by a Hall-of-Famer who never had a winning season in NHL play, the selection committee recognizing Charlie’s lofty level of play and taking into account that he often toiled for weak New York teams. Originally obtained from the family of Chuck Rayner, the delectable treasure will be accompanied by a letter of authenticity. Please take note that this item may be subject to a silent reserve.
