Hall of Fame left wing Johnny Bucyk’s photo-matched Bruins game-worn jersey dates from 1975-77. The outline of a former captain's "C" is visible on the left breast and there is evidence of a former longer and higher nameplate in an era when nameplates were put on for TV games and removed. This Bucyk game-worn jersey is photo-matched to the black sewing thread on the lower left sleeve and the team repair going through it. It is also photo-matched to the two folds below the bear’s head patch on the right shoulder. A third photo appears to be show the team repair in the upper yellow band on the left side hem, and the uneven portions of the black bands at the junction of the hem. This gamer has a cut fight strap and customized elasticized cuffs. Great game wear here features at least 16 team repairs, including four to the yellow twill on the double twill No. 9 sewn on the back. Some red paint transfer on the front and left sleeve, and good board burns. Champion size 46 flag tag sits in the back of the neck. Champion jerseys were first used by the Bruins during the 1975-76 training camp and were used during the 1975-76 playoffs, 1976-77 regular season and 1977-78 training camp, and this jersey was worn by Bucyk during that period.
The Bruins used Champion jerseys during the 1975-76 training camp, and Wilson jerseys during pre-season games (Champion could have been used as well). Wilson jerseys with the Bicentennial patch were worn during the 1975-76 regular season, and Wilson and Champion jerseys during the 1975-76 playoffs. Wilson during 1976-77 Bruins training camp and pre-season games (Champion could have been used as well). Bruins open at home with Champion, then switch off back and forth between Wilson and Champion into October before Champion takes over totally. Stall & Dean takes over around January or February. Champion road jerseys are no longer used, but Champion home jerseys comes back for three special regular-season games with nameplates. Champion is used in the 1977-78 training camp (George Plimpton wears a Cheevers No. 30 while skating with Jim “Seaweed” Pettie during camp in his book “Open Net”). Champion is never again worn by the Bruins in a game after the 1976-77 season, but Champion jerseys hang around to be used in different capacities through at least the 1981 training camp.
