Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction June 2018
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/19/2018
Hailing from the small southern Manitoba border town of Pilot Mound, John Sherratt “Black Jack” Stewart first came to prominence delivering shattering hits for the Portage Terriers of the now-century old MJHL, with two years then spent with the Pittsburgh Hornets before embarking on 10 successful seasons with the Detroit Red Wings. The two-time Stanley Cup champion spent the war years representing the RCAF in both Montreal (1943-44) and Winnipeg (1944-45), with the final NHL season of his HOF career guarding the blue line of the Chicago Black Hawks in 1951-52. Originally obtained directly from Stewart’s family, we have an RCAF Bombers wool sweater that was worn by the superstar circa-1944. A label from Winnipeg’s Dominion Knit sits along the collar, with the vintage garment measuring-out to roughly a size 42. Featuring a thick and layered polychrome felt team crest with inserted red maple leaf, “RCAF” is affixed above and “Bombers” below, with “16” over verso in large and bright yellow felt letters. A signed LOA from Jack’s son Barclay F. Stewart will accompany.
Surviving in absolutely wonderful condition with bright and vibrant colours, just a few small holes are visible over each sleeve, with an additional pair of holes just above the team crest. There is also some loose threading and minor separations to the reverse numbers, with what appears to be a small area of red paint transfer over the lower section of the “6”.
