Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction June 2018

Tracing their roots back to the 1929-30 season where they were christened the Indians, the Cleveland Barons played in the AHL from 1937-73 and served as the league’s most successful club, winning ten division titles along with an especially impressive nine Calder Cups. We have a Barons sweater that has been attributed to 1940’s AHL-mainstay Ed "Whitey" Prokop. Void of any collar labeling, the vintage wool features a Rawling’s label with “44” sizing over the inside hem near the left seam, with dry cleaning instructions along with a blank fly tag placed adjacently. In solid royal blue with alternating white and red accent bands spread evenly over each shoulder, “12” appears over both the front and reverse in red-over-white layered tackle twill. Originating from Prokop’s time in Ohio during the mid-1940s - circa 1945-46 – the rare-style wool should garner serious attention, especially considering the popularity of the franchise with collectors.
Some minor toning/discolouration to the royal blue wool material is visible, most notably around the collar and over each lower sleeve, with just light wear to the affixed front and verso numerals. Numerous holes of varying sizes are also present, spread evenly throughout the garment, with larger examples on the lower front and reverse, and over the left elbow section.
