Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction June 2018
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/19/2018
Ancient wire and leather facemask, quite possibly worn for more than one sport but similar in style to the mask worn by the netminder for the Japanese Ice Hockey Team at the 1936 Winter Olympics held in Germany. This example features two large circular eye holes along with a matching “spitter” mouth hole, with both the forehead and chin padding affixed through seven leather and metal clasps. Currently void of it’s original strapping, the mouth section is somewhat bent, with wear to the surface finish of the mask in spots, along with additional wear to the clasps. The padding also shows some minor discolouration. A rare style that would fit wonderfully into any collection celebrating the men who guard the nets.
