Serving as affiliates to the New York Rangers and sharing space with their parent club at vaunted Madison Square Garden, the New York Rovers began play in the newly-formed EHL in 1935-36, and would fold after the 1951-52 season. The team would be resurrected in the late-1950s before changing their name to the Long Island Ducks, in 1961. This lot contains a great collection of vintage Rovers player photos from the mid-1940s totaling 36. All glossy prints in the 8” x 10” range, 17 are present from the 1943-44 EHL season including Fred Shero, Jack McIntyre, Spike Wilson, Lawrie May, Bill Warwick, Doc Stark, Jack Mann, Art Strobel and others, while 19 prints are present from the 1945-46 EHL season including Cal Gardner, Church Russell, Lew Edwards, Fred Nelson, Suds Sutherland and others. The year is written over the bottom left of each photo, with the player’s name listed over the bottom right. The majority of the photos in the collection show light to moderate handling wear, with just the odd small crease or wrinkle, with corner wear also a factor. There is just a pair of photos that have clear tape added, with a second pair that sport small areas of material loss. A matching 8” x 10” photo of Julian Sawchuk from the 1940-41 season is also included, along with an original illustrated Rovers mailing envelope (9” x 12” with moderate wear and toning) and thin-stock 1939-40 team photo (8 ½” x 11”). As an interesting side note, 40% of the 1945-46 Rovers’ roster was from Winnipeg and surrounding communities (Selkirk, Transcona and St Boniface).
