Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2014
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/4/2014
Guy Lafleur standing in the second row here, wearing a suit and tie, brings forth the somewhat sad story of one of hockeys most electrifying players deciding to end his Montreal Canadiens career. After getting off to a two goals-in-19-games start in 84-85, the Flower shocked Canadiens faithful by announcing his retirement, unable to cope with not being as productive as seasons past. Gainey, Robinson, Naslund, Carbonneau, Chelios, Nilan and Bobby Smith are most notable among the pictured players, while Hall-of-Famers Beliveau, Savard, Lemaire and Laperriere are, like Lafleur, in suits. The Habs took the Adams Division regular season title that year with a 41-win, 94-point campaign but dropped a game seven overtime heartbreaker to the rival Nordiques in the playoffs. The teams 75th anniversary is noted below the names identifying those pictured, while the photo itself, taken by David Bier, measures 9-1/2" by 13-1/2". Professionally matted and framed to 21" by 22-1/2", the photo was obtained directly from Guy Lafleur and will come with his signed LOA.
