Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2014
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/4/2014
Thought-provoking image of hockey great Howie Morenz was released by World Wide Gum months after the legend had passed away in hospital and indeed lists Howie on the back as "Formerly of Canadiens" and tells of his January, 1937 injury in a game against the Black Hawks that led to his death. Also called "Ice Kings", these cards were often believed to have been issued in 1936-37, but this card helps to dispel that belief. Imagine the “oh!” gasped by the original owner when he/she discovered this cardboard treasure in a pack of gum. Earning NM 7 recognition at PSA, this example of the V356 set’s key card is joined by four other similar 7s on the PSA Population Report and is second to only one NM-MT 8 copy. Statistics reveal that 26 Morenz WWG cards have been examined and encapsulated by PSA since its inception. Chances to own a high grade example come along very infrequently.
