What terrific and ultra-intriguing insight into the NHL Player’s Association’s early licensing agreements is provided with this “portfolio” once belonging to California Golden Seals’ player rep Marshall Johnston. A 20-page typed letter from Joe Grant, president of the “LCA” firm which negotiated deals for the NHLPA, explains the agreements and accompanies samples of Eddie Sargent, Esso and Colgate stamps/albums, a Post shooter and Topps hockey cards. A complete set of 1971-72 Sargent stamps in folded sheets is a highlight, with more details on this fabulous find on our website. The contents of the portfolio, (dated January 24, 1972 on the cover), begins with page 9 of the letter stapled to the front cover of a 1970-71 Eddie Sargent stamp album picturing Bobby Orr, with a sealed 14-stamp ensemble of U.S. version “Finast” stamps also stapled to it. The text reads: Eddie Sargent Promotions Inc. – Photo stamps of players and albums for the stamps. This license was originally for the both the U.S. and Canada but was later restricted to U.S. only when Imperial Oil proposed to use stamps and albums in Canada (see License “D”). To date we have been paid $30,000 from this license and there are signs that greater future income may result.” Also revealing are the details about the Esso Power Player promotion, with that page joining the Golden Seals two-page “spread” from an Esso album, with Seals stamps affixed. It informs why the popular Esso promotion, originally planned to continue in ’71-72, was scrapped because of new rules established by the Canadian broadcasting community, with the CBC thus refusing to allow commercials promoting the plan! A sealed Post shooter of Paul Henderson is stapled to the General Foods Ltd. “page”, with a page of Colgate stamps (“Wings”), twice stapled to the page referencing the license with Colgate-Palmolive Ltd. Details about the licenses granted for Topps trading cards, pucks with facsimile autographs on them, Tudor tabletop hockey games and Daoust skates are also interesting to check out, with a loose ’71-72 Eddie Sargent stamp album, (VG condition) picturing Gilbert Perreault on the cover also present. Cool, cool stuff that is still highly-collected to this day!
