Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2014
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/4/2014
Utterly fascinating and wonderful pieces of Canadiana and hockey history are these little treasures, issued by Winnipeg’s Paulin Chambers Company and picturing men, women and boys who skated on frozen surfaces in Western Canada. The cards, which have the distinction of featuring mostly local senior, amateur and scholastic teams/players (mostly) from the Prairies, were inserted into Paulin’s Hockey Bar, with each card including an offer on the back for collectors to return a complete 90-card set to the firm in exchange for “one quality Hockey Stick.” Girls could request a box of Paulin’s Delicious Chocolates if they didn’t want a stick. It was ladies first as the University of Manitoba’s Girls Hockey Team appears on card #1, while over three dozen similar group shots picture teams from such places as Moose Jaw, Humboldt, Swan Lake, Port Arthur, Brandon, Regina, Calgary and as far west as Cranbrook and Smithers, BC. A few recognizable names to hockey historians, their cards all each earning appealing EX-MT 6 recognition from PSA, are Nick Wasnie, a two-time Stanley Cup champ with the Canadiens, Paul Runge, who skated for the Bruins, Canadiens and Maroons, Hec Fowler, the first goaler of the Boston Bruins and Smokey Harris who also suited up for the original Bruins squad. They contribute to the terrific group garnering the title of The Number One Finest Set of All-Time, and which has a set rating of 4.094 and a weighted GPA of 4.786, impressive given that Paulin’s cards surface infrequently and when they do they often have a redemption stamp or punch hole or are in rough shape. Amazingly, all cards offered are free of redemption stamps and just five examples here do not make it to VG 3, with six awarded marks of NM 7 leading the way. Two at EX-MT+ 6.5, (15) at EX-MT 6, a half-dozen in EX+ 5.5 holders and (19) graded EX 5 are next, while five cards come in at VG-EX+ 4.5, an even dozen at VG-EX 4 and seven are slabbed VG 3. All individual grades are viewable at PSA, along with interesting comments on the years-in-the-making, award-winning ensemble from our consignor. Good luck with this outstanding hobby opportunity. Not present here are #s 8, 9, 10, 25, 29, 32, 38, 44, 48, 51, 59, 83 and 89.
