Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2014
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/4/2014
A mind-boggling and thought-provoking pre-war ensemble, the likes of which we have never seen or offered features 60 images of famous men who helped write hockey history and who will have the beholder gawking for lengthy periods of time! This was the William Paterson firm’s second hockey card effort, with however these examples obviously never distributed and remaining in uncut form some 90 years later. The sheet is actually in two sections and commences in the upper left corner with card #1, depicting Ottawa goaltender Joe Ironstone. A couple of cards over is where King Clancy appears, while in the lower right corner of the first section, or in the middle of the bottom row if the two sections are placed in their original form if you will, are Canadiens’ legends Howie Morenz and Aurele Joliat, with teammate “George” Vezina just above Joliat. Other highlights include the rookie cards of Hall-of-Famers Alex Connell, Hooley Smith and Sylvio Mantha (erroneously named “Billy” Mantha), as well as the cards of fellow HOFers George Boucher, Frank Nighbor, Cy Denneny, Billy Burch, Shorty Green, Clint Benedict, Harry Broadbent, Sprague Cleghorn, Reg Noble, Jack Adams and Babe Dye. What a time in hockey history it was. The first-year Boston Bruins appear together in the upper right, while below them are members of the Toronto St. Pat’s. The Hamilton Tigers are in the upper middle and the Montreal Maroons, also in their first season and sporting sweaters with “Montreal” across their chests, are in the lower left. The reigning Stanley Cup champion Montreal Canadiens appear in the lower middle. Fascinating is how, at the time, just a dozen or so men constituted an entire roster! Now then, as for condition, a combination of light, moderate and heavy creases is to mention, with the back of the left section including added paper at the corners and in the middle. Paper loss on the back of the second section, at the corners, is also to note, along with three rather small (less than an inch) edge tears. Added in ink in the middle of each section, on the front, is “1924-25”. Gorgeous is how we and numerous astute hobbyists see the sensational ensemble, which calls out for professional framing and a choice spot in a pre-war hockey card/collectibles shrine. Please note that this exceptional hobby rarity is subject to a silent reserve.
