Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2014
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/4/2014
Fab signatures on documents from three iconic NHL builders and Hall of Fame inductees, including a 1939 Chicago Stadium check paid to the order of $3.45 to the Chicago Tribune from Stadium and Black Hawks owner Arthur Wirtz. The invoice, which was detached from the check, is also included. Another check, from Maple Leaf Gardens and dated 1980, is a “Pay to the order of” Harold E. Ballard, for the amount of $600.00, and is signed twice by Ballard, once on the front, and again on the back. Both Wirtz’ and Ballard’s signatures were done with blue fountain pen ink. We also have a typed letter, dated Jan. 7, 1967, from NHL President Clarence Campbell to “Friends of Hockey in Sports Media” with Mr. Campbell saying what a great pleasure it is to send along the limited-edition book “The Trail of the Stanley Cup” as a memento of the 50th anniversary of the league. Mr. Campbell has signed in blue ballpoint pen at the end of this letter which remains in outstanding condition. All four signatures are clear and smudge-free. We’re also enclosing a copy of an 8” x 10” picture of Chicago Stadium circa-1950s, reproduced in recent times. Arthur Wirtz was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1971 and passed away in 1983. Harold Ballard was inducted in 1977 and passed in 1990. Clarence Campbell was inducted in 1966 and passed away in 1984.
