Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2014

Cool story to Mario Lemieux’s distinctive 1990-91 Penguins game-issued captain’s jersey. This beauty sports the "41st NHL All-Star Game Pittsburgh" patch, which is sewn on the left shoulder even though the game was played the previous season. Le Magnifique was Super Mario indeed for that one at the Igloo as he claimed MVP honors for a record third time. The Pens continued to wear the patch into the following season until November 1990 when the Chicago Black Hawks, who were hosting the 1990-91 All-Star Game, lodged a complaint with the league, which forced Pittsburgh to retire the jersey set. Mario’s number 66 is handwritten in black marker on the Maska Ultrafil flag tag in the back of the neck. There are very light reddish-brown stains on the left front between the collar and the captain’s C, on the left shoulder near the collar, and on the front tail below the team crest, and a small black mark on the left side of the nameplate.
