Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2014
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/4/2014
Early example of Wayne Gretzky's autograph is this beautiful pencil signature applied by The Great One in his late teens on this "Closest to the Pin" contest card which is dated "1979" in blue ballpoint. Wayne celebrated his 18th birthday on January 26 of that year and went on to finish his first and only WHA season by leading the Edmonton Oilers to the Avco Cup final, where they lost to Winnipeg. Wayne's personal services contract ensured that he remained with the Oilers when they joined the NHL that fall and he scored his first NHL goal in Vancouver on October 14. Wayne's pencil signature is the only one on the white side of the 3" x 3 1/2" cardboard contest card from an unknown golf tourney. The reverse has three handwritten names for a Longest Drive contest.
