Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2014
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/4/2014
Backstopped by future Hall-of-Fame Montreal Canadiens goaltender Bill Durnan, the Kirkland Blue Devils captured Canada's Senior Hockey title in 1939-40 by beating the Calgary Stampeders in three consecutive finals games, winning 8-5, 9-1 and 7-1. Durnan then moved on to the Montreal senior Royals for three seasons before joining the Canadiens. Members of the championship squad received golden mementos like this, measuring 1” x 1 ½", with "Commemorating Lake Shore Blue Devils - Winners of Allan Cup - Kirkland Lake 1940" and a hockey scene on the front and no engraving or markings on the back. The medal has been well-preserved, with some mild scuffing and tarnishing, and some slight nicks on the bottom edge. Really cool, from a Northern Ontario town famous for producing big time hockey players.
