Extremely rare and magnificent 1924-25 Hamilton Tigers panoramic team photo displays the only team in NHL history to win the regular season title but not make a playoff appearance. Goalie Jake Forbes, and HOFers Billy Burch, who won the Hart Trophy, and Shorty Green, the brother of Tigers leading scorer Red Green, led Hamilton to first place but the team went on strike for more money before the Stanley Cup playoffs. NHL president Frank Calder suspended the Tigers, who folded in the offseason after the players were bought by the expansion New York Americans. Nicely detailed Tigers 24” x 9 1/2" photo has the “Panoramic Camera Toronto” notation on the bottom right and is mounted on modern board and displayed in a 25 1/4" x 12” beige matte. The photo, which was taken outside the Barton Street Arena in Hamilton, was obtained from the family of Ken Randall, a Tigers defenseman who had eight goals and 10 assists in the NHL’s first 30-game season, which proved to play a crucial role in the players’ decision to strike.
Pictured from left to right are W. Yeales, business manager Percy Thompson, Art Ross (not the HOFer but rather the 1922-23 Tigers coach), Charlie Langlois, Red Green, Eddie Bouchard, Burch, Forbes, Mickey Roach, Randall, Alex McKinnon, team captain Shorty Green, Jesse Spring, 1924-25 Tigers coach Jimmy Gardner and trainer J. Smiths.
There are a few vertical creases and some tears on the upper right portion of the photo and on the right edge through Smiths on the far right. Overall, this scarce panoramic Tigers photo remains a fantastic display piece from the first team in NHL history to wage a players’ strike, a most costly one for the players and team, at that!
Randall, Forbes, Burch, the Green brothers, McKinnon, Roach, Langlois and Bouchard are among the Tigers players who debuted with the inaugural Americans team the following season. Spring played for Pittsburgh in 1925-26.
