Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Spring 2014
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/17/2014
Extraordinary collection of four full-page, 8 ½” x 11” handwritten letters from the legendary Gary Carter, who was the toast of the town in Montreal when he wore the uniform of the Montreal Expos. Three of the letters are written and signed on Carter’s “Kid8World Wide letterhead from the early 1980s, while the fourth, dated as 29/5/79, is written and signed using Expos letterhead. All four, in clear and unblemished blue ballpoint pen ink, are to Carter’s friend at Molson Breweries in Montreal, thanking him for all the beer sent to Carter and for support at the Gary Carter Invitational Golf Tourney. The tone of all four letters is extremely friendly and gracious, making these wonderful mementos from “The Kid” who was inducted into Cooperstown in 2003 and passed away in 2012. Montreal and Gary Carter was a match made in heaven, the city has named a street and park after him, and Carter’s plaque at Cooperstown shows him as an Expo, although he also starred with the New York Mets where he was part of the 1986 World Champions. Also included in this lot is an envelope one of the letters came in, handwritten on the front, probably by Carter, with the “Kid 8 Inc” and Carter’s picture in the corner. We’re also including a full ticket from a May 12, 1974 Expos/Cards game at Jarry Park (Carter would debut with the Expos in September of 1974), and a ticket stub from the 1982 MLB All-Star Game held at the Big O in Montreal in which Carter was the starting catcher for the National League squad. The letters (with envelope folds), envelope, and tickets have all been preserved in excellent condition.
