Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Spring 2014
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/17/2014
One of the key cards from the 1910 Imperial Tobacco lacrosse C59 set is that of #90 Joe Cattarinich, known in hockey circles as the first goalie of the Habs before Georges Vezina came along, and who in 1921 became co-owner of Canadiens which would last until 1935. He would be inducted into the Builders category of the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1977. Mr. Cattarinich’s 1910 lacrosse card is a beauty, a Pop-2, graded by PSA as EX-MT 6, with none graded higher. Only 12.38% of the 1,066 cards from that set submitted to PSA received PSA 6 grading, in the top 16.6% of all cards submitted from that set. This great man and his partner Leo Dandurand, both of whom helped make the Montreal Canadiens one of world’s greatest franchises, also founded the Montreal Canadians Lacrosse Club in the early-1930s, around the same time as Cattarinich sold his shares in the hockey team. Former NHL great Newsy Lalonde managed the Canadians lacrosse team.
