Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Spring 2014
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/17/2014
A beautiful PSA 7 NM card of the legendary Mickey Ions from the 1910 Imperial Tobacco C59 lacrosse set, a Pop-1 with none graded higher from a field of 18 Ions C59 cards PSA has graded. Only 2.72% of the 1,066 cards from that set submitted to PSA received PSA 7 grading, in top 3% of all cards submitted from that set. Ions, with the Toronto Tecumsehs in 1910, would later join the Vancouver squad, a team run by hockey entrepreneurs Lester Patrick and Frank Patrick, and when the brothers started the Pacific Coast Hockey Association in 1911, they hired several of their lacrosse players -- Ions among them -- to referee the league's games. He joined the Western Canada Hockey League as senior official when the PCHA folded in 1924, and the National Hockey League in 1926 when the western loop folded as well. He was later named referee-in-chief of the NHL, a position he held until 1942. Mickey Ions (or “Ion”) was elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame - one of three referees first to be so honoured - in 1961.
