Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Spring 2014

With colorful and fascinating images on the fronts and text on the backs which reads in part "Leading Players in the Canadian National Game," these Imperial Tobacco cards include dozens of "leading-scorers-at-PSA" and contribute to the ensemble earning the prestigious PSA title of "The Number One Finest Set of All-Time." The assembly features several men who were two-sport or multi-sport stars over one hundred years ago, with its set rating (5.49) and weighted GPA (5.59) being marks that have never had any serious challengers in PSA land. There are exactly four dozen (48) examples which fall into the "none-ever-graded-higher-at-PSA" realm, including (10) Pop-1 NM 7 cards, two Pop-1 EX-MT+ 6.5s and (14) EX-MT 6 cards. Oh yes, and there's also the condition-leader; a fabulous NM-MT 8 #70 card depicting Canadian Lacrosse Hall of Fame member Neil Felker, one of just two C59 lacrosse cards, (all players combined – over one thousand cards), to garner NM-MT 8 recognition in the history of PSA. As for the better known hockey players who also played professional lacrosse, arguably the grandest of them all, Edouard "Newsy" Lalonde appears twice. His #97 card here is a Pop-1 housed in an EX-MT 6 holder, with none higher, while card #100 is one of five slabbed EX 5, with just one higher on the PSA Population Report. The card of another scoring wizard, Joe Malone of Quebec Bulldogs and Montreal Canadiens fame, is also a Pop-5 EX 5 and edged by just two others at PSA. Fellow Hockey Hall-of-Famers Paddy Moran, (Pop-8 EX 5 with one higher), Joe Cattarinich, (Pop-2 EX-MT 6 with none higher), Tom Gorman, (Pop-3 EX 5 with one higher) and referee Mickey Ions, (Pop-1 NM 7 with none higher) are also noteworthy, as is Jeff Malone, (#85 Pop-2 EX-MT 6 with none higher), a member of the Quebec Bulldogs Stanley Cup championship team of 1912-13. Other players who were also prominent with skates on in the winter and recognizable to hockey historians are 15-Currie, 18-Hutton, 20-Powers, 22-Butterworth, 26-MacMillan, 32-Degan, 38-Allen and 48-McKerrow, while card #42 pictures boxing Hall-of-Famer Tommy Burns. Ah yes, and then lacrosse which is represented by lacrosse HOFers 56-T. Gifford, 58-G. Spring, 59-C. Spring, 60-Rennie, 65-Feeney, 66-J. Gifford and 67-Murton, with another five enshrined in British Columbia's Lacrosse Hall of Fame. The two cards needed for completion are 21-Gaul and 81-Graydon. Featuring brilliant colors and charismatic images, this perennial PSA award winner offers an array of intrigue, with all individual cards viewable on the PSA Set Registry, (in the hockey section), where individual grades are also included. Assembled and now offered by Mr. Simon Bourque, this set "scores" in a number of outstanding fashions.
