The late Tommy Gorman has signed his confidential letter to fellow deceased HOFer Happy Day in black fountain pen ink. Gorman’s letter in his capacity as general manager of the Ottawa Senators is typed and signed on team letterhead. Dated August 11, 1953, it is addressed to “Mr. C.H. Day, General Manager, Maple Leaf Gardens, Toronto, Ontario” and stamped “Recd Aug 12 1953”. The letter opens, “Dear Happy:” and goes on to discuss the fate of prospect Harry Robinson, with Gorman proposing that he get Robinson under contract in order to direct him to the Maple Leafs. Some fascinating behind-the-scenes reading here, with Gorman signing off, “Would you please, in the meantime, treat it in confidence.” Robinson’s name is underlined in pencil in the opening paragraph, which has another looping pencil notation on the upper left side. “Bob Davidson to answer” is handwritten in blue fountain pen below the masthead, with “Bob phoned” in pencil beneath that. An autographed letter signed by deceased HOFer Tommy Gorman, one of hockey’s most successful managers who guided the Senators’ dynasty of the early 1920s, coached the Black Hawks to their first Stanley Cup in 1934, followed that up by guiding the Maroons to their second Cup the following year, and revived the Montreal Canadiens and sent them on to new levels of greatness beginning with Cup wins in 1944 and 1946.
