Wow, talk about a rarity! Awesome original Lord Stanley handwritten thank you note on parliamentary letterhead dating to the 1870s is signed simply, "Fred Stanley". The man who donated the Stanley Cup in 1892 in the latter stages of his tenure as Governor General of Canada went on to become the 16th Earl of Derby. Before that, he served under Queen Victoria as a Conservative Member of Parliament from 1868-86. The future Lord Stanley of Preston wrote this short missive on a 7 1/4" x 4 3/8" sheet of letterhead with the "House of Commons" embossed seal at the top. There is some soiling on the letter, particularly on the left side, which does not affect Fred … um, er … Lord Stanley's magnificent black fountain pen ink signature. The sheet is dated in the bottom left corner and the “7” of the year can be made out on the left but the second digit is not clear, likely a 0 or an 8.
