Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Spring 2014
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/17/2014
Wonderful illustrations and text of the world’s fastest game from the Victorian age, including a January 12, 1895 Harper’s Weekly with an inside feature titled “Hockey in Canada”, a 2-pager detailing the rules of hockey with 6 great illustrations of players from the Montreal AAA, Victorias, Wanderers and the Ottawa Hockey Club, facing off, checking, blocking, and “spurting!” with a referee holding a bell. This 109-year old magazine measures 11” x 15 ½’ and is in nice condition with some spine damage to note and a touch of spotting, but with unflawed pages. Also included is a page dealing with hockey from an 1898 “The Illustrated London News”, showing a group of fellows on skates banging away at a ball with their hooked sticks, plus an 1898 page measuring 10 ¾” x 15” showing men, women and children skating on a lake or river, with some guys also banging away at a ball with their sticks. Next is an 1897 German page at 8 ¾” x 12” showing 3 hockey illustrations, and finally a 1903 page measuring 10 ¾” x 15 ¼” with a terrific illustration of men in bowler hats and tams in a mad chase for the ball. Awesome illustrations of the grand old game played long ago on rivers and ponds.
