The late LeRoy Neiman had a keen eye for identifying and interpreting sports talent, and the renowned American artist put one in the top corner with this dazzlingly colorful rendition of the young Wayne Gretzky. Neiman, who died in June 2012 at the age of 91, has signed in pencil at the bottom of this "The Great Gretzky" limited-edition serigraph issued in 1981. The Great One also placed a huge pencil signature in the bottom left just to the right of the "4/300" limited-edition pencil notation. Neiman's work is renowned for brilliantly colored, stunningly energetic images of sporting events and leisure activities. The late artist was able to convey the essence of a game or contestant with great impact, from the Kentucky Derby to Wilt Chamberlain, from the America's Cup to Muhammad Ali, from the Super Bowl to Bobby Hull, and of course, the Great One himself. One of the bigger Gretzky artworks with a 35" x 28" image, it captures the on-ice aura and fluid movement of the game's greatest skater. The serigraph measures a substantial 41 1/2" x 34 1/8" in total and is displayed within a 45 3/4" x 37 1/2" matte. This unframed though spectacular display exhibits brownish darkening surrounding the outer edge of the serigraph that lightens as you move outward. The Gretzky autograph is wonderful, slightly bolder than Neiman's signature. Anything by Neiman will only continue to climb in value. This simply stunning piece of sports artwork history comes with a COA.
