Wayne Gretzky smashed Phil Esposito's NHL record for goals in a single season with a hat trick in Buffalo on February 24, 1982. On his way to 92 goals, Wayne broke Espo's mark set in 1970-71 with his 77th goal against the Sabres' Don Edwards, his first of three goals in the final six minutes of the game. The Great One numbers 78 and 79 for his ninth hat trick of the season, tying Mike Bossy's single-season record, a mark Wayne broke before the end of the season. The goal puck mounted on this plaque is Gretkzy's 79th goal, the one he blasted home on a slap shot with 17 seconds left to cap the Oilers' 6-3 win at the old Memorial Auditorium. Comes with an Edmonton Oilers LOA signed by GM Kevin Lowe and a MeiGray Certificate of Registration. The puck is a Sabres NHL official game puck that has been mounted onto the 9” x 7” wood plaque. The Oilers LOA states that the puck “was plucked from the net that night” and later mounted with tape onto the display plaque that has a pre-drilled wall hole mount in the center.
The gold-colored plaque at the bottom reads:
“Wayne Gretzky, 9th hat-trick – 77th, 78th and 79th goals, Tied the NHL record of most hat-tricks in a single season, set by Mike Bossy of the New York Islanders in the 1980-81 season. Assisted by: Pat Hughes and Risto Siltanen, Date: February 24, 1982 in Buffalo, N.Y., Teams: Oilers vs. Buffalo Sabres”, with a small Oilers logo medallion glued to the bottom left corner.
