Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2013
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/5/2013
A fantastic mix of images here provides swell looks into the past, with Toronto Maple Leaf teams surrounding the (just won) Stanley Cup from 1949 (Kennedy accepting Cup from Clarence Campbell with Bill Barilko at the far left) and 1964 (another third-in-a-row title!) highlighting the NHL “entries”. Paper caption is on the reverse of the former (VG) photo, while the latter is a UPI (EX) affair. An original of goalie John Ross Roach actually dates back to 1929, with Lester Patrick presenting a trophy to be competed for in the New York Metropolitan league in 1934. Minor league highlights include a Jan. 19, 1958 dated one of Willie O’Ree in his Quebec Aces uniform but with the newspaper caption on the back revealing “has just been called up by Boston Bruins” and “He is first Negro to play in National Hockey League.” Bun Cook is among the Soo Greyhounds pictured in a 1923 team photo, while other intriguing team photos picture the Philadelphia Arrows (circa-1930s or ‘40s), Pittsburgh Hornets (similar period) and United States national teams (1948 Olympic, 1955 and ’59 world championships). An individual 8” by 10” of 1960 U.S. Olympic coach John Riley Jr. is notable as are U.S. action shots from the worlds in ’61, ’62 and ’69. Other international hockey notables are a trio from the 1979 Challenge Cup in New York, with the Soviets (at their bench) celebrating a winning goal, Ken Dryden looking into his net after the winning goal and one of Russian goalie Vladislav Tretiak. Some ‘50s and ‘60s minor pro action shots include a few oversized jobs with the New York Rovers, Clinton Comets and Johnstown Jets among the participants, with U.S. college hockey also represented with notably ’38-39 Yale captain Gilbert Humphrey, (alongside coach Murray Murdoch), ’39-40 Princeton captain Richard Purnell and Dartmouth captain Johnny Manser (unidentified year but same vintage) among those pictured. A dozen N.Y. Islanders action shots take things into the ‘70s and ‘80s, with some four dozen reproduction photos, (many of them snapshot/postcard size), bringing the grand total to well over 100. A well-rounded hockey historian will love these!
