Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2013

Goaltender Gary Edwards needed gloves for summer pick-up hockey following his first season in the bigs with the St. Louis Blues in 1968-69, and so, as he states in the accompanying LOA handwritten and signed by Edwards, he took a pair of gloves from the castoffs to use in the off-season. Offered are these blue, gold, and white Blues leather gloves, possibly from the team’s inaugural season in the NHL, and include serious use with major holes in each palm, major scuffing which has discolored certain parts, particularly noticeable in the white areas. The screened “Cooper” stamp is clear on the right glove’s cuff, with a nearby cloth manufacturer’s label faded and torn. The left glove has a different cloth label, partially readable as “Cooper”, while each glove has a different handwritten number, one that says “15” and the other “16”. Edwards writes in his LOA that the numbers aren’t the same because he picked the best gloves available which didn’t necessarily mean they were a match. Also offered are a pair of Oakland Seals gloves that in the accompanying LOA Edwards explains he got after the 1976-77 season when Oakland had moved to Cleveland to become the Barons. Edwards had also used these game-used gloves for summer skating. Both of these old and classic Seals gamers have substantial holes in each palm and fingers and each contains major scuffing and marks throughout. A Cooper label is sewn on the cuff of each, and five glove fingers in total have been taped to hold them together. Both pairs of gloves have definitely seen their share of hockey in both winter and summer.
