Canadiens connection here with this pair of Bobby Smith and Guy Lapointe game-used sticks.
Chosen No. 1 overall by Minnesota in the 1978 NHL Draft, Smith won the Calder Trophy as a North Stars rookie in 1978-79. He led Minnesota to its first Stanley Cup finals appearance against the Islanders in 1981 before he moved to the Habs in a blockbuster trade early in the 1983-84 season. Smith scored the Stanley Cup-winning goal for Montreal in the spring of 1986. His CCM PPM 101 game-used stick with a dedicated autograph has a date stamp low on the back of the shaft but it is unclear if the final digit of the year is 1981 or 1987. “B Smith” is stamped on the shaft which has the number 15 he wore with Minnesota and Montreal handwritten in black marker above it, and again on the top of the butt end. Smith’s original tape jobs remain on the knob and most of the blade, with the latter missing a few strands that were removed on the heel and towards the toe. Loads of great game use with all kinds of red, blue, green and yellow paint transfer all over the shaft. Smith has signed, “Mark, All the best, Bobby Smith” on the front of the shaft and there are four letters, “S A M W”, handwritten in black marker on the back side of the shaft below the knob.
A six-time Stanley Cup champion with the Habs, Lapointe was a member of the Big Three, the Canadiens’ vaunted trio of Hall of Fame defensemen along with Larry Robinson and Serge Savard. The four-time NHL All-Star was inducted into the HOF in 1993. Guy’s Sher-Wood PMP 5030 game-used stick with “5 Lapointe G.” stamped on the shaft dates from the latter stages of his career with St. Louis and Boston. His familiar number 5 is handwritten in black marker and his original tape job remains on the knob. Lapointe’s tape job was removed from the now-bare blade. This gamer, which displays game use in the form of marks on the shaft and blade, is cracked low on the shaft at the heel and wrapped in white hockey tape that covers the year on a date stamp on the back of the shaft.
