Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2013
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/5/2013
The Detroit Red Wings shocked the hockey world on March 3, 1968 when they acquired superstar left wing Frank Mahovlich from Toronto in a stunning eight-player deal with the Maple Leafs. The Red Wings also got Garry Unger and Pete Stamkowski from the Leafs, along with the rights to Carl Brewer, in return for Norm Ullman, Paul Henderson, Floyd Smith and Doug Barrie. This Red Wings home red dureen game-worn jersey was likely worn by the Big M in the late-1960s. This #27 gamer with Olympic tagging and a size 48 flag tag in the back of the neck underwent a number change back in the late-1960s which resulted in half of its 16 team repairs, when the previous number 18 was removed from the back and both sleeves and replaced by its current white twill numbers. Mahovlich, who was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1981, wore his familiar number 27 during his entire tenure in Detroit, right from his acquisition from Toronto until he was traded to the Montreal Canadiens on January 13, 1971. The Big M finished the 1967-68 season with 16 points in 13 games with Detroit and followed that up with a career-high 49 goals the following season. There are seven team repairs on the back, three on the front, three on the left sleeve and three more on the right sleeve. More game wear shows in washed-out bloodstains on the white band of the front tail, inner pilling, and black marks and board burns. Comes with an LOA.
