Dennis Hull's Team Canada 1972 game-worn jersey is an awesome piece of Summit Series history from the iconic Canada-Russia showdown. The familiar white durene knit uniforms from the historic eight-game international competition were worn for all four games played on Soviet soil. They are seldom offered and recent sales of game-worn examples have reached record price levels. The well-publicized auction of Paul Henderson's historic series-winning-goal jersey saw a world record price of well over $1 million dollars.
While we'll never know what difference Bobby Hull would have made in Team Canada 1972's lineup, Dennis Hull certainly left his mark on the Summit Series. After dressing for just one of the first five games of the 1972 Canada-Russia series, the Golden Jet's younger and funnier brother was a fixture in Team Canada's lineup for each of the last three Summit Series games in Moscow. Dennis wore this iconic white gamer when he took over from Vic Hadfield as the left wing on Canada's line of Rangers Goal-a-Game HOFers Jean Ratelle and Rod Gilbert. With Canada down 1-0 early in the second period of Game 6, and 3-1-1 in the series, Hull got his country back in the game with the first of Team Canada's three straight goals in a crucial 3-2 win on September 24. Dennis, who also scored in the dying moments of Game 4 in Vancouver, added assists in each of the next two games to finish the series with four points, a point per game, and more importantly with three straight wins once he made it into the lineup.
This striking heavy knit sweater features a stylistic maple leaf rising up from the waist in red. The number "10" is sewn onto the back beneath the word "CANADA" in single-layer tackle twill. The manufacturer's black and gold "Tricot Sport Maska" tag is stitched into the collar beside remnants of another tag, long since removed. The white material behind the red maple leaf was trimmed out and removed to make the jersey lighter. This is a typical team alteration that we have observed in other Team Canada 1972 game-worn jerseys, including Henderson's million-dollar #19 gamer. Clear game wear from Moscow shows in black marks on the right breast, more on the upper left back, including through the red twill C in "Canada", and through the back of the upper left sleeve, as well as on the left rear tail. There are also a few reddish brown stains, notably on the bottom of the back of the right sleeve, beside the elbow gusset, and beside the collar on the upper right front. There are pinholes on the shoulders and inside the front and back hems that do not diminish this Summit Series treasure's display.
Originally from his collection, which was sold by Classic Auctions in 2003, this historic Team Canada 1972 game-worn jersey comes with Dennis Hull's signed letter of authenticity as well as a vintage 11x14 photo of him wearing the jersey in one of the Moscow games and a plaque that reads "Dennis Hull's Sweaters from Team Canada 1972 'Series of the Century'".
